Christian Allyn

Christian is a 2017 graduate of the University of Connecticut College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, with a double major in Horticulture and Resource Economics.

Invasive Plant Solutions was started by Christian during his junior year at UConn as a practical means of addressing his deep concern with the damage and disruption wrought by invasive plants, both in his own life and in the larger natural context around him.

As a millennial growing up in the over-protective 1990’s and early 2000’s, Christian had few opportunities to truly enjoy playing outdoors. Although his parents built a secluded country home in an abandoned horse pasture surrounded by picturesque hedgerows, outdoor play was always restricted by the ever-present reality of vines, thorns and ticks.

Not only was Christian’s childhood play interfered with, but as his knowledge, awareness and appreciation of the world around him deepened in the aftermath of 9/11 and the arson of his hometown's iconic Canaan Union Depot only three weeks later, Christian came to see invasive plants as more than just a nuisance. Bittersweet vines, multiflora rose thorns and the ticks harbored by Japanese barberry became symbolic for him of a world and culture in decay and disarray. Native plants, by contrast, seemed to embody the heritage, peace and legacy of the land in which they had evolved together, now under siege from invasive plants on every side but waiting to be recovered and ready for revival.

Through Invasive Plant Solutions, Christian is dedicated to identifying and implementing optimal strategies for invasive plant control and eradication, and to restoring our native landscapes to what they can and should be: a natural and life-sustaining inheritance for us all.
